What's The Bottom Line With The Deep End of the Ocean

The Deep End Of The Ocean (1999)

Starring Michelle Pfeiffer (Hairspray), Treat Williams (Deep Rising) and Whoopi Goldberg (Sister Act)

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

I like Netflix in general, they put on some under-rated films and I just wanted to search 'Whoopi Goldberg' films and see what comes up. This film was one of them, The Deep End Of The Ocean. And, the cast seemed solid I mean Michelle Pfeiffer's acting is always incredible to watch even when she played Catwoman in Batman Returns. "A mother grows desperate when her 3 year old son disappears, but he turns up -- nine years later in the town where the family has just relocated". This is the description of the film in Netflix, I was curious. It reminded me of a few films that I've seen, when the kid runaway, gets kidnapped and I generally throughout of kidnappers as well because considering this was in 1999 we saw a lot of those films.

After I Watched The Film?

This is probably one of the most realistic films I have seen in a very long time. The drama is just spot on. Michelle Preiffer's one of her best performances. It really shows the realism of losing someone and how it effects the family and then suddenly joins this forgotten family and we see the transition of how difficult it can be. Whoopi Goldberg in this film plays a very charming and sensitive detective and we also see how the family can and can't cope with the lose of there son/brother or having that brother/son back in the family. The realism is so there that we feel for this family's grief, guilt and emotional. This film really shows the emotional wreckage of what could happen and what can happen. We see how easy or difficult the family can deal with the news. But, we also see some interesting complicated issues and twists throughout the film and we see how the film becomes more intense and it's just hypnotic! Plus, the ending really shows that families can really get through anything but some things won't be forgotten.

Did They Get The Mothers Characteristics Right?

Personally, I would have to say yes.simply because of Michelle Pfeiffer's performance. We see her at the start when losing her son as a relaxed individual who thinks he is hiding in the hotel somewhere. Then, it escalates and escalates and then when all else fails she gives up hope until someone gives her something to hold onto too. Which makes this such a believable film because we see her with no doors shut. We see Michelle Pfeiffer's character of being incredibly emotional with right reasons to be as well.  Then, when her son pops up to the door....it's a sense of shock more than anything. But, it's something to consider when watching this film and how would a mother react.

So, What's The Bottom Line?

Powerful. It's one of the most realistic dramas and a must see if you like the what if story dramas and that is the bottom line.

Tips If Watching The Film?

  1. The script does flow and the acting is there I would just say, don't watch this film if you like intense drama this is quite a laid back good feel drama.

My Rankings

6.3 is the general rating on IMDB but I generally rank this a 7 or an 8 because of how the film flows and how it ends as well. But, that's my personal ranking on this film because the ending was really great and was surprised.
