Whoopi Goldberg

(November 13, 1955 -  )

Introduction to Actor

Welcome to a new feature called Anonymous Actors, where That's The Bottom Line looks at different actors films, facts and small biography. And, we thought we start with someone extremely talented and that's Whoopi Goldberg. She's are feature this week because we feel passionately about Whoopi, she's an incredible actress, has won numerous awards, produced, directed, and the facts will shock you! So, let's start with what was our first film we saw Whoopi Goldberg in.

First Film/TV Show

The Telephone (1988)

This film does have many of Whoopi Goldberg's comedy, but it surprised me. The ending was brilliant, the transition was brilliant and this was 1988 this was before Sister Act, she actually was in The Colour Purple before this and it's surprising that this being her first ever film/TV show she is brilliant. The character that Whoopi is playing is just you're ordinary person but with a twist! I don't want to spoil it because I don't think many people know about this film. But, if you're a Whoopi Goldberg fan, why not see her in a different light? This isn't a comedy! It's a thriller/drama film I would say, it's mainly just Whoopi Goldberg, and the level already seeing her in this film is stunning. I usually get bored if it's just one or two actors all the way through the film, but something about Whoopi made it interesting to watch. And, below is one of the scenes from the film check it out and if you like it try and find it, I have it on DVD so it did go to DVD and it's just a brilliant film to see this actor in a new light.

Last Film/TV Show

A Day Late and a Dollar Short (2014)

Am not going to lie, I cried and weeped at the film. Whoopi still got it! This was a TV Movie and it's basically about a mom (Whoopi Goldberg) that only has 6 months to a year to live. It's that typical soppy time. And, her kids are always arguing, the cast is actually amazing! I would highly watch this drama because the ending you won't see coming. I didn't see it coming and usually I get a clue. But, I cried at the end, I cry at Disney films. But, I cried for a good 3 minutes because it's a happy and sad film I found it. I like having a mix emotion films and there's LOADS of different themes that families encounter in this film. I don't want to spoil it but they did loads of challenging themes and in such a short film I loved it! I just love this film and I would highly recommend this film to anyone, not just because of Whoopi Goldberg but the other actors take it to that next level of making it worth watching. If you love you're drama filled films this is the one to watch, check out the trailer below!

Top 5 Favourite Films

1) Sister Act (1992)

HEY BABY! That's right it's Sister Act is my favourite favourite film of all time. She's absolutely stunning in this film. It's full of comedy, action, suspense, murderers and off course singing and dancing nuns! What more could you ask for in a film? Plus, as you may or may not know that Sister Act is now a musical and Whoopi Goldberg produced it and also has been starred in the musical as Sister Superior...ironic really, she suits the character, best of both world. So, I thought I treat you since this is my favourite film and also Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit it's a brilliant sequel! So, let's get these videos, if you've been under a rock or under cover this is a highly recommend family film to watch, it's a feel good film and the music is brilliant. So, we have Hail Holly Queen from Sister Act and off course the finale in Sister Act 2, no not Ain't No Mountain High Enough, the amazing Joyful Joyful. AND! I even have an interview with the woman herself saying why she was in the musical of Sister Act as Mother Superior!

2) Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)

This film has action, comedy and computers....yeah, Whoopi Goldberg plays a character in a bank, that works on computers inputting numbers all day long....until someone messages her...turns out it's a secret spy! She turns from geek to detective all in one night. It's suspense, some of the moments she gets in are hilarious and serious. It's just a great way to see Whoopi Goldberg in a different way, from Sister Act not highly intelligent, always wanting a laugh. To a more, intelligent, balanced and nervous character. Plus, there's twists and turns that you don't see coming. It's truly a great film, I am actually going to watch it later because it's one you can watch again and again, and the funny bits are just hilarious! I thought I find one of my favourite scenes, seems there's not many on YouTube for some reason! But, if you haven't seen this, this is a perfect Whoopi Goldberg film to watch.

3) Whoopi Goldberg Back to Broadway (2005)

Now, not many people know that she's a stand up comedian, that's really where she started in the DVD special edition there's one from 85', it's just brilliant. The 2005 version is a expanded version on I believe three/four characters. She does the political drug addict who knows what's what and it's hilarious the impressions. It starts off, black out, slow lights come up and you hear Whoopi singing "Around......the world.....in 80 m************ days" For starters, this is my first thing EVER I heard Whoopi Goldberg swearing, the 85' version she does about 8 characters, so if you really want to see her stand up start with that and see the 2005 version, there slightly different but you see why I picked the 2005 version than the earlier version. And, I think this is why I love Whoopi Goldberg as a performer, because she's not a celebrity that lost the plot from stardom like Justin Bieber! Whoopi is what you see is what you get which I feel more actors need to be like. The video below, it's the actual 1985 version of her stand up and I think it's the whole bang!

4) The Associate (1996)

The best way to explain this film, you know Robin Williams dressing up as Mrs. Doubtfire.....well, this is the same thing but Whoopi Goldberg dressing up as Mr. Robert Cutty. It's actually quite a realistic film because around this time businesswoman around the era were mistreated and not equal, still aren't in some areas. So, Whoopi decides to work for someone called "Mr. Robert Cutty". She made him up! So, people start getting interested because "Cutty" back then would be quite a high end street name, it sounds fancy. But, it's full of comedy and full of friendship, drama, conspiracies and the trouble that Mr. Cutty and Whoopi get into are just hilarious. Couldn't find anything on this! So, no video but if you like Mrs. Doubtfire, you'll love this film!

5) Rat Race (2001)

Personally, I found Rat Race one of the best comedy films of all time. It has brilliant comedy actors from John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson to Whoopi Goldberg (off course) and Seth Green. It's one of those films you can't fault. It's really cheesy and funny! It's basically from what I remember John Cleese wants to play a game and gives these people a key to a locker, in a train station, and inside that locker is $2 million dollars.... You can see what could go wrong here! We have from fast powered rocket cars, to riding donkeys to driving a bus full of smiling woman, thrown of trains, helicopter crashes! It's just one of those films you cannot laugh at, you even see Nazi's I mean, it's just a random bunch of comedy genius, the writing was brilliant and at the end, or near the end you see a quite a well known band, this is where I know the band from and not Shrek....that's right Smash Mouth are in this film. It's just a great family comedy film. So, to redeem myself for the past no video here is a trailer of Rat Race and I couldn't find the scene with the squirrels and Katy Bates! But, found another scene where they ride a rocket car! Enjoy!

What Makes Whoopi Goldberg So Interesting?

If I would have to pick anything, I would say what I say before "what you see is what you get". Whoopi seems one of those genuine people, like you won't see a different side of Whoopi off camera, she's on the View about women that voices there opinions and she hasn't changed. I think that's why she's such a brilliant actress because she has the ability of creating this characters and acting this characters without doing these huge changes. I've seen her in dramas, horrors, thrillers, crimes, comedies, family films and TV Show and she surprises me every time. And, I think that's why she is so interesting to watch as a viewer because you don't know what to expect from Whoopi. Her acting is truly one of the best I personally think. And, whilst researching she's in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so that's another reason I think she's interesting she loves performing and I like the fact she's still in movies as well. And, since I've watched about 20 episodes of the View, interviews, posts and I follow her on Facebook. Whoopi Goldberg doesn't judge people, unless she knows for a fact what they did was inappropriate or wrong. There was an episode of the view where it was about 911, and one of the guests said "Muslims" or something along that lines when in fact the correct word is "terrorist" because the guest who's a politician were calling all Muslims terrorist which is wrong. I think Whoopi Goldberg is a perfect role model, because she doesn't judge from her past experience she's gone through so much and I think if you look at her history, her books she's written you'll know she had a hard life and worked for it.

Ranking of Whoopi Goldberg

I think it's fair to say that this actress, Whoopi Goldberg deserves a 10 out of 10, she's still going strong and has won so many awards, she's been on television, radio, film, animated series. I mean, Whoopi has even been on stage she's done the whole circle of the entertainment industry, she's directed, produced, co-produced, sung, danced. She's one rounded actress which is here to stay.

What's The Bottom Line?
