Philomena (2013)
Starring Steve Coogan (Despicable Me 2 and Tropic Thunder) and Judi Dench (Skyfall and Notes on a Scandal)First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?
Considering it;s a drama I was more curious to see how Steve Coogan plays this character. I have only seen him in comedies and was curious how great his drama acting is. Plus, I love Judi Dench I haven't seen her in a bad film yet. I knew nothing about this movie, I knew nothing about the storyline, what's it about. It just appealed to me to watch this drama.
After I Watched The Film?
The drama in this movie, is incredibly powerful. This is actually a true story which shocked me a bit not compeltely because I knew in some points that this sort of thing actually happened across the world. But, the performance of both Steve Coogan and Judi Dench is utterly spell bounding! Steve Coogan's hard hitting fired journalist helping Judi Dench to find her long lost son....it's truly a story that must be heard. I actually still a bit emotional about the film because of how Judi Dench's character throughout the film progress and we even see Steve Coogan have some memorable emotional roller-coaster not only with Judi Dench's character but with the whole search. We learn to love each of these characters and we can of understand them whilst we watch this film. But, I have to say the most interesting of all of the film is that I didn't get bored of just seeing the two same characters. In today's movies we have 5 or 6 characters we learn and get into. But, concentrating on just two actors really throughout the film is actually quite interesting. The relationship you can see it in all angles which is always a plus when you're watching a great drama.
Is This Drama Worth Watching?
It's actually worth watching and I'll tell you why. It's completely different from the romance dramas we have been getting lately. It's not an action packed thriller drama where there's a conspiracy in the office. It's simple which is probably why you should watch it! It's about an old Irish woman trying to track down her long lost song with the help of a journalist. Very simple yes? It's not over complicated, there's even some twists and turns in the story which I found inspiring. Plus, we get into Judi Dench's past and present and it just flows throughout the performance. And, it's actually a book called 'The Lost Child of Philomena Lee", it's quite interesting that we learn about these characters and you find out what happens after the story which gives you a great sum up of the whole film. Because, half way through I was thinking that the drama portrayed in this film is so believable it's actually shocking that's it a true story.
So, What's The Bottom Line?
Just because it's two people in the film mainly, don't think it will be boring. It's incredibly powerful and Steve Coogan's performance does it equal with that of the awe inspiring performance of Judi Dench's performance and that's the bottom line.
My Rankings
I would highly recommend this film, IMDB rated this a quite high 7.7 rating and I give it a solid 8. And, that's because of you're seeing these two great actors on this film in a different light for me. Plus, with the twists and tales that happen in the movie it's something worth seeing.
