What's The Bottom Line special Warmth Wednesdays presents Edward Scissorhands

presents
Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Starring Johnny Depp (Nightmare On Elm Street and Pirates of the Caribbean) Winona Ryder (Black Swan and Girl, Interrupted) Dianne Wiest (I Am Sam and The Odd Life of Timothy Green)

Introduction

I picked this quite unusual Tim Burton drama film because it does have a some form of warmness to it. Not only the key character of Edward Scissorhands but generally the film is quite unique compare to the other Tim Burton films. But, let's just take a moment to look at this star cast we have Conchata Ferrell (Two and a Half Men), Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Anthony Michael Hall (The Dark Knight), Kathy Baker (13 Going on 30), and Caroline Aaron (21 Jump Street). I picked this film specifically for Warmth Wednesdays simply because it's a stunning masterpiece by Tim Burton and the fact he went into a very serious, drama, and above all else unusual take of 'love' and the limitations it has. Plus, I just realised that this film is older than me! It's 24/25 years old this film.....and yet it has a stunning, magical sense of a later film. I honestly thought it was older.

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

Am not gonna lie, my first impressions was....scissors for hands....okay? But, I did like Johnny Depp in a previous film I saw him in Platoon I think before I saw Edward Scissorhands. But, I need to re-watch Platoon to find out. If not, Edward Scissorhands was my first film I saw Johnny Depp in! Which I have to admit is a great moment to have really considering I was excited about the film because it was different. Even, when I was little I always loved the different films and still do. But, later on I actually watched the very first film he was in which is "Nightmare On Elm Street" he's actually really good in that film as well. I haven't seen Johnny Depp in a bad film so far. Anyway, the rest of the cast considering I was quite young I didn't really know them. The main ones I know now from this film is Winona Ryder because she was also in Beetlejuice which I love. And, Dianne Weist who's in one of my favourite Whoopi Goldberg film 'The Associate'. But, thinking about Tim Burton at the time I think I was 6, I was just thinking how magical, wonderful and inspiring it was. I know for a fact, it was at Christmas and I really wanted to watch it.

After I Watched The Film?

I feel that this film is quite one of the underrated films that Tim Burton has produced. When I talk to people, they like Alice in Wonderland, Beetlejuice, Batman Returns, Batman, Mars Attack, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas. BUT, I haven't met a friend apart from one! That actually mentions Edward Scissorhands! I think, when the film finished I was just in awe and it made you really think about the whole differences with people. Yes, he has scissors for hands. BUT, we saw the neighbourhood actually becoming friends with Edward. Again, at first they were scared because they were unsure of what Edward is, and why he has hands for scissors. I mean, when we consider this we have to think that in a way it connects to us. We see people different every day and stop and stare, could be the hair colour, the way the clothes clash. BUT, this film is actually sending a strong message that even with a freakishly weird appearance like hands for scissors, they can find the biggest emotion of 'love' and actually feeling for someone with absolutely nothing wrong with them. I love the fact, that this film looks at the modern family and just throw someone like Edward in the scenario. And, I have to admit the ending always makes me cry! What! Am a cry baby at films okay! But, all honestly Johnny Depp in the whole film says 169 words all together. That's less than a page! And yet, we understand and comfort Edward....and that is truly a challenge for any actor and Johnny Depp NAILED IT!

What Makes Edward?

You know what, this is pure opinion. But, I think what makes Edward is the simply of humanity. He is helpful, he is shy, he is a listener, he is a wonderer, he is a answer seeking guy. Which is what I think just a few combinations of what makes Edward. We see in the film that he isn't this scared creature you have to be afraid of, I think because people don't understand him, he will always get into situations that will cause him to get into trouble. Plus, I think we really see who Edward is when he is with Kim. I think when Kim and Edward are together we really see the whole circle of, uncomfortable acquaintances, to friends, and then to lovers. I feel Tim Burton really made an effort with Edward Scissorhands and chose quite wisely with Johnny Depp to portray such a remarkable and complex character. I just said what's the first glances but as we know as humanity, people grow into different emotions so Edward could be very different. But, as we see in the film we see he doesn't age which is quite interesting to think about. Maybe, his hands is his eternal soul keeping him to experiment, to create such wondrous beauty but at a cost that no one will ever see him or his true beauty.
