Divergent (2014)
Starring Shailene Woodley (The Descendants and The Fault in Our Stars) Theo James (The Underworld: The Awakening and The Inebetweeners Movie) and Kate Winslet (Titanic and Finding Neverland)
Random Fact!
There's actually something this film and The Fault in Our Stars have in common. Shailene Woodley character Tris has a brother called Ansel Elgort. In The Fault in Our Stars, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort characters are lovers. So, from brother and sister to love to eternal lovers.First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?
You know what when this film was being trailer and I saw them on YouTube first, I was actually quite excited. Simply because, I like these kind of films that live in a post apocalyptic society. But, more importantly at the time nothing was out that I really want to see. I mean, Divergent is possibly the first film I actually want to see in 2014. All honesty, the only name for me that stood out was Kate Winslet at first. I haven't heard of Shailene Woodley, now she's quite popular because of this film and The Fault in Our Stars. But, doing some research she has done lots more. Theo James, am not a huge The Underworld fan so the name literally flew past my head. But, Kate Winslet we clearly know from the hugely popular Titanic. But, overall my impressions of the film were solid and good, and I hope this film isn't just a action packed film but has complicated twists and turns.
After I Watched The Film?
I love this film. Literally, and the reasons are they have taken this whole idea and made it into something quite complicated, comfortable, understanding. I felt when watching the film I can see the flaws in the community, I can see the backstabbers, the loyal ones. But, more importantly I was curious about something and that was explained to me.....What is Divergent? Like say it 10 times fast Divergent....go on. Bet you look silly now! But, we haven't come across this word in our common conversations. The word itself to me is hypnotic and I feel Shailene Woodley portrayed this hypnotic and yet mysterious character about herself. I did feel thou, the factions, that really makes the film....interesting. There's Abnegation (The Selfless) so basically being selfless to everyone and the people that need help. Dauntless (The Brave) in it's simplest form I would say Dauntless our wild police officers. Erudite (The Intelligent) which our your brain bunch like scientists, researchers, politicians etc. Amity (The Peaceful) which are there that don't like the concept of war. And, Candor (the Honest) which is basically the value of honesty is how they live by.
I feel thou, just saying the factors that's all you get. Because, think about just being in Erudite. You have to see things at a logical point of view. I didn't actually see in the film who would be the creative ones. I would have to say logically the Amity, they see the true beauty in everyone and instead of war, have peace. But, I think in today's society no one would stick to one faction because it's too inhuman to be in one. Everybody has these emotions, these characteristics and above all the humanity in ourselves to be in any of them.
What's Divergent Like?
Right, considering I just gone on about the factions in Divergent. I am going to be honest it just reminds me of The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games has 12 completely different factions, 1 being basically you could be awesome, have money, luxuries etc, to number 12 being the poorest of poor. But, it kind of annoys me that it reminds of that film. Simply because, I thought Divergent is completely different but as I watch the film am just like. Ahh, there's a villain, oh they fall in love. But, I have to say....in all honesty Divergent is better for the actual understanding of the factions and why they have it and has reasoning for why you pick them. Whilst, Hunger Games.... it's this one event every whatever....I honestly can't remember and you fight for you're faction basically and you're life. So, when I think about Divergent and Hunger Games. Environment, society and up bringing in these environments I would have to say Divergent. Simply because, we understand more in Divergent all year round then Hunger Games. I feel Hunger Games lack something....we have seen them just before the Hunger Games. But, we haven't seen them all year round....you know what I mean? So, Divergent......we get the concept that this is you from now on. Whilst, in Hunger Games it's basically play the game......and see you in the next film. I feel they don't fill in the gaps of what the people are to the games. I feel there's no human connection until the Hunger Games begin.
So, What's The Bottom Line?
You know what, Divergent really opens you're mind to the what if scenario.....I can see the human race going into this because we all want to be individuals but there will be casualties along the way. I would highly recommend watching this film simply because the acting, the storyline, the complicated society is just stunning to watch. Bottom Line? Join the faction you want to join because if you're Divergent.....don't trust anybody.
Tips If Watching The Film?
- I would try not to link Hunger Games and this film together. I would make sure you haven't seen Hunger Games in a while....Because, I think you would enjoy the film more and not be like "This is like Hunger Games'.
- There's not much but watch Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort relationship in Divergent and then watch The Fault In Our Stars. I was actually quite shocked at the level of performance from both people but saw how much hard work they put into there characters.
My Rankings
I give this a great 9 out of 10. IMDB users overall gave this a 7.0 overall which I actually understand. I think people were expecting a more unique film. It has it uniqueness but when it's up against Hunger Games. I think people will make this link. And, people would be saying to themselves 'They copied it' but honesty it's from a selection of books. They are already doing the sequel to Divergent which I'll be watching because even thou I see the link....Divergent for me is better than The Hunger Games.
