The Green Mile (1999)

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

All I know about this film, was that Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan was in it. I actually watched this when I found out Michael Clarke Duncan passed away, and I loved his acting ability. I can't remember how I came to watch it, it went like Daredevil because he plays Kingpin in that, and he plays a ape in Planet of the Apes and it just followed the next day to The Green Mile. Now, I watched Daredevil before straight into The Green Mile. I love him as the Kingpin he gives the presence of power. And,off course I know this film for being from a Stephen King novel. At the time, I just thought Stephen King does horrors but he also does dramas as well. But, we also have our screenplay writer being Frank Darabont who did Shawshank Redemption but also Walking Dead. So, already the cast Tom Hanks I don't need to justify at all is an incredible actor, Michael Clarke Duncan a extraordinary performer and then we have David Morse, who I can't think what's he is from, from the top of my head. But, looking at who David Morse is he's one of those you forget the name but remember the face.

After I Watched The Film?

I have to say that this is an incredible film, with a fantastic storyline. My first actual thought was "oh it's a prison and executions nothing to it' But, in reality it actually has so much humanity, reality and actually seeing all the actors play an incredible role in there characters. I have to say I can't fault it. I am being completely honest, yes it's long but I wanted more! I cried, I laughed, I thought. I think it's important with a film being this long it has these powerful messages and looking into each character a little bit and then expanding. I generally feel that this film is the only film that will make me cry until it finishes it. It's so powerful the acting that you feel you don't want it to happen, but the acting feels real you don't want anything bad to happen to these characters you've grown to love. Tom Hanks, plays to me, the closest character to that typical family member who cares for his family and gives 100% commitment to there work. Because, let's be honest we see films where the mom/dad/family member loves the family and hates the work, or loves the work and hate the family. This film really portrays reality, it's realistic, at the time as well of where the film set it's true to some extent. Michael Clarke Duncan....I don't want to give away anything but the character to me is someone that has broken free of conditioning and is thinking freely, logically and let's be honest the correct way. For example, let's that Michael Clarke Duncan out of prison and put him in today's society. I can see him being either a judge, a counsellor or a researcher because he has this concept of understanding things that we are....and aren't there.

What Makes This Film So Popular?

Am not going to be all it's Stephen King off course it's popular, or Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan made this film. Because, in all reality it's popular because people wanted to see this film. Yes, I will say that mainly Michael Clarke Duncan made this film because you can't flaw his character. But, then you can say Tom Hank's character made the film because it kept the balance of the environment of prisoner atmosphere. But, I have to say the script made the film more, the script is beautifully written because I think people forget. The book is just a layout for what the script could or should be. So, the writers were Stephen King and Frank Darabont, and Frank Darabont also directed The Green Mile. So, take that into consideration you can see why it was soo popular. Frank Darabont since writing the script with Stephen King who wrote the novel, Frank Darabont understands what Stephen King wants. I think Frank Darabont is quite an underrated director because we know Steven Spielberg, Matt Lucas, I personally think Frank Darabont should be up there. And, that's how I think this film is so popular, understanding what the writer wants and then portraying what Stephen King wants onto the big screen.

So, What's The Bottom Line?

Bottom Line? If you haven't seen it yet.....SEE IT! It's one of the best films you'll ever see. It is long, some people are put off by that for some reason. But, it's well worth it. Bottom Line? If you can wait for a 30 minutes meal and then have a bite and think it's the best ever....that's The Green Mile, every minute from start to finish is like eating a juicy steak it's done to perfection and you'll enjoy the taste, the emotion it's leaving with you and that's the bottom line.

My Rankings

I usually do the tips, which I'll add here, make sure you get you're tissues ready and make sure you can pause it when you need the toilet because every moment of this film is worth the watch. IMDB gave this a huge 8.5 rating and I will be giving this a 10 out of 10 for the flawless performance, powerful messages and just overall phenomenal film to watch.
