What's The Bottom Line special Toxic Tuesday presents Shaun of the Dead

presents

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Starring Simon Pegg (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Star Trek Into Darkness), Nick Frost (The Boxtrolls and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), and Kate Ashfield (United and The War Zone)

Introduction

I was trying to pick the two films that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost aren't in, and just noticed there in The Boxtrolls! ANYWAY! Welcome to Toxic Tuesday and I picked Shaun of the Dead, simply because it's really a toxic comedy to get worked up for. It has comedy, it has action, it has a toxic zombie in you're living room, back garden and more!

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

Considering I think this is the first film we see these two film comedy duos take stage I was excited. Nick Frost and Simon Pegg from this film has created more films with them in. We have seen them in Hot Fuzz, Paul, Cuban Fury, This Is World's End and more to come! I love zombies films and I always wanted to see this film when it first came to cinemas because they kept the original idea of slow moving zombies not running ones! And, the fact that it's a comedy.....remember we haven't seen very many zombie comedies before 2004. Think about it, this is probably the best zombie comedy to date. Warm Bodies....no....just no defies the whole element of what a Zombie is. Then, we have In The Flesh (TV Show) and Walking Dead (TV Show) but there not really comedy it's more drama based. I have to say, zombie comedies Shaun of the Dead now has hit right at the top and probably stay there. Plus, we have a huge cast members in this film like Bill Nighy (Love Actually), Lucy Davis (The Office), Dylan Moran (Black Books), Penelope Wilton (Pride and Prejudice), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit), Matt Lucas (Alice in Wonderland). There's such a great cast in this film that got me excited for this film. And, if you're wondering where Martin Freeman and Matt Lucas is, check it out on IMDB and search for them in the film. Because, I forgot they were in this film!

After I Watched The Film?

I think you know by now, I love this toxic film! It's just a hypnotic, comical, action packed roller coaster. The fact that they don't go OTT with the army getting involve makes me happy, it's just showing normal people and what they would do in these very unique situations! From a baseball bat and shovel, to an ashtray and record discs! This is probably one of the most unique zombie films around to date. Simply because, we have seen zombies running, zombies being hugely MASSIVE! zombies that fall in love.....On that note, let's get back to something good like Shaun of the Dead. The acting is flawless, I mean it's like they are playing themselves, and having fun with it. I have to admit the ending is just brilliant, and plus the friendship between Ed and Shaun is true friendship, they laugh, they sing, they get drunk, they help each other out and even share an ice cream between themselves. But, I have to say considering I think this was actually a risk to produce because it was there first film and these two working together on the big screen, you have to admit that the make up is stunning! The blood looks realistic and not ketchup or liquid, it's pure rotting and gross blood which is what we want to see. Plus, the opening is just hilarious! Always cracks me up, to the very end it's just a film that has taken there time to produce, with a remarkable script.

Why Is Shaun of the Dead Popular?

My theory behind this is because it's so different, so unique and the fact that the actors give it all they got for there characters. It's such a loved film for horror and comedy fans. Think about it, you're using two kinds of genre the comedy element of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg along with some fantastic actors to play these hilarious situations. Then, the horror element of the zombies factor involved. The make up, the movements, the characters of the zombies all have characters in themselves. And, I think the script and the actors playing there roles made it a smash hit at the box office because when we think of a comedy zombie film, I personally will think of Shaun of the Dead first.

So, What's The Bottom Line?

If you haven't seen this film yet....why haven't you? It's such an incredible comedy film to watch! It's so real it's unbelievably fantastic! It's truly one of the best Nick Frost and Simon Pegg films they'll probably ever do together and that's the bottom line.

Could There Be Another Shaun of the Dead?

There's always a yes or no to this question, so am going to answer them both. The Yes, could be that it's still the same but Shaun and Liz has a child and maybe Ed finds true love as a zombie and has a child? Who knows! It has to be something that's equally as good. But, it could be another out break of zombies but want to kill the human race and Ed has to choose. It can go either way that. The No, there's a saying "Don't break something that's already broken". So, to me Shaun of the Dead is completely fine as it is, don't mess with it unless the script, the cast, the make up all these are equal to the first film. And, plus how the film ended you know how the human race will cope so why bring out a sequel? Plus, Ed can't speak only zombie language so it will be quite hard to bring out the characteristics.

My Rankings

Personally, I give this a 10 out of 10, has serious moments, funny moments, action packed moments. It's one of those films that has bits of everything in it. IMDB rated this an 8 which honestly will be the best for this film, simply because it's always gets repeated and some people will find it boring but am one of the people like every other that can watch a film again and again.
