What's The Bottom Line Toxic Tuesdays presents The Day After Tomorrow

presents

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Starring Dennis Quaid (Pandorum and Vantage Point) Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko and Source Code) and Emmy Rossum (The Phantom of the Opera and Mystic River)

Introduction

I picked The Day After Tomorrow for my Toxic Tuesday special because it's a huge weather disater we have finally polluted the Earth that much that the weather will dramatically change. So, through the toxic weather changing cycle what will happen?

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

I have to say I actually hate the whole end of the world, weather disaster films. And, I'll tell you why. It's too simple for me. I am not that fussed about the characters but if it's raining hail stones the size of cars am just like....okay, i'll go in a building then. I am not being funny, but most weather disaster films are very OTT! They come to the point where it just is ridiculous. I do have to say thou, I do like the cast.  I love Dennis Quaid from The Parents Trap, I love Jake Gyllenhaal because I love the film Donnie Darko. I know I won't see a bunny rabbit in this film! But, it's always interesting to see actors take on different kinds of acting and characters. Emmy Rossum I knew from Phantom of the Opera, so seeing her in a non-musical role shall we say is a more a surprise to me. I know actors don't just when going into musicals just stay there. I mean, Hugh Jackman did Les Miserables that doesn't mean he is there forever now, he has X-Men still to do. But, that's basically all my first impressions. The trailers looked overall quite interesting because at the time 2004, we are getting riskier with films and CGI technology.

After I Watched The Film?

Okay, overall it's an okay film. I like the whole father son relationship, the weather disaster effects are excellent. But, I did think at some points why do we have other characters that aren't really needed in the film. I have to say I really enjoyed Emmy Rossum and Jake Gyllenhaal acting and relationship within the film. But, there was some comedy moments which for me is great, but I can see some people would hate that! It's a disaster movie! Not, a comedy. I thought they could of gone further with the disasters and the risks. I just felt it was too science based as well. We didn't get much disasters, we got a handful and just went "okay that's all you get". It was just a bit "Ahhh disaster!" and then "We're saved!" I don't think weather works like that does it? Surely, if it was a huge disaster weather just wouldn't dramatically change from that situation

What If This Happens Right Now?

Well, am in UK and am not near the ocean and am in the house so I think I'll be okay. But, in all honesty now, clearly keep warm if it dramatically goes to cold and snows and if you do see a huge amounts of water/sea/ocean coming at you just put your umbrella up and hope for the best! Or better yet, why don't you build an ark like Noah.....worked for him right? I would recommend having plugs on the ark thou for you're iPhones and other electronic devices. I can't imagine the human race without a hair dryer now! But, thinking about it I think we would all just panic for like a second and then get our thoughts and just get on with it. Am not being funny, the film showed me people never saw water before! I am sorry you wouldn't stare at a probably 200 miles an hour tornado coming towards you or a huge amounts of water hurling at you the size of a building! Especially, take a picture of it! I know it's like once in a million opportunity but at the end of the day if this water kills you that one second to take a picture, could of been the second to be alive and hide in McDonalds.....hey, got to think of food at these drastic times.

So, What's The Bottom Line?

I am real sad to give this film a 5 out of 10, and overall it's a 6.4. It's just okay, it's watch able and that's it! I would highly not recommend to watch it but if you like the science behind the weather! Like, the biography of paint drying go for it! And, that's the bottom line.

Tips If Watching This Film?

  1. If you suddenly have the urge to build a boat, make sure you give me a call just in case judgement day comes.
  2. Make sure you do what these guys did and when heard about it just go to the snack machines, make sure you have enough food and water for months and fire wood, don't burn books!
  3. Try and make your own use of electricity because lets be honest and this annoyed me....surely if a Library is full of water....electricity is absolutely impossible....yet it happened here!
