presents
Mary Poppins (1964)

Starring Julie Andrews (Sound of Music) Dick Van Dyke (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and David Tomlinson (Bedknobs and Broomsticks)

Introduction

This week my Throwback Thursday machine has taken me way back to 1964, where one of the most iconic classic Disney films take place.....Mary Poppins. I picked Mary Poppins for my Throwback Thursday because I think people are quite surprised and shocked what's happened since this film has been released onto our big screens. And, the newest film 'Saving Mr. Banks' this is a perfect time to bring back where the idea, the person came from, Mary Poppins. We all know her as the best Super nanny in the world with wonder and honesty with a firm but gentle hand on how to get behaved children.

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

You know what, I can't remember my first impression. When I heard the name 'Mary Poppins' I was just like what's so merry about her. Remember, I saw this I must of been like 5 or 6 it's an incredibly popular Disney film. I think I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang first because I just remember having Mary Poppins on VHS.....See we are really going back in time when we mention VHS. But, I think my impression was that this will be the best film I've ever see. I remember seeing it at Christmas Eve I think, I was with my Dad, Mum, my sister Karen and my Grandma. We were in the living room, the fire roasting because it was snowing and this was on.

After I Watched The Film?

You know what, I still love Mary Poppins. I think she is what we all should become as a human being. Being understanding, firm and friendly. But, I wish I saw David Tomlinson in more films because I absolutely love him in Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury and in this Mary Poppins. Dick Van Dyke....what can you say about him? He is truly one of my favourite childhood actors, I remember seeing him in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and off course, I went to my Grandma's and we watch Diagnosis Murder! What a brillaint show, I learned more about him from that show then any film I'll ever see him in. But, then we can't forget who created Mary Poppins in the film.....Julie Andrews. I saw this film first before Sound of Music. And, if I had to choose someone else to pick Mary Poppins....I just can't. She captures the beauty, the smile, the musical rhythm of who is Mary Poppins. It's not just a spoon full of sugar that gets this woman to tick. You can see her as this mysterious, strange creature with this magical powers....or this wondrous, marvellous woman that can pop into paintings. I think when I saw this film my mind just exploded when she went into the painting. It was really inspiring to see and I even tried it once haha. I was 5/6 I can imagine. I think that's what great about this film you're childness comes out even in David Tomlinson's character and all the characters even the bankers, show there childness in the film. Which for me, a Disney fan and lover of all Disney films.....it's something truly magical to capture on the big screens.

Has Mary Poppins Moved Forward To The 21st Century?

You know what let's start with Saving Mr. Banks, I didn't know the author of Mary Poppins didn't want animation, didn't want Dick Van Dyke playing that iconic character. There was actually SO MUCH she wanted to change. But, I feel like Mary Poppins has a new view to me now. Espeically, David Tomlinson's character am not going to say why or what happened in the film. The thing I just said isn't a spoiler because that's fact. But, I actually cried at a certain scene of Saving Mr. Banks and I would literally watch Mary Poppins and then Saving Mr. Banks two completely different films, but for me has the balance of magic. THEN, let's not forget the musical 'Mary Poppins'. I have actually watched the musical and I have to say it has every single magical experience like the film. But, I love the dancing, the singing it's basically the film with more musical numbers and for a performing arts graduate that's what the doctor ordered! The picture above....I really want to happen but it's fake! I would love to see something like this. See Mary Poppins and Tim Burton together! Simply because, Tim Burton has the magic and so does Mary Poppins but to see her portrayed in a different way will expand her character. But, if this happened we see Helena Bonham Carter playing Mary Poppins and I can actually see Johnny Depp playing Mr. Banks. But, as I said this won't happen was just like an hoax/april's fool thing! But, would of been amazing!

So, What's The Bottom Line?

You know what, if you want to fly a kite, you can fly that kite as high as you can. Because, I feel Mary Poppins the film is something anyone can relate to and yet when that last song starts you'll feel everybody in the room, theatre etc will feel the same happiness as the Banks did in the film....and that's the bottom line. Happiness, magic and a musical number is what you need then a spoon full of sugar.

My Rankings

IMDB users totalled this film at a quite low 7.7 rating. I am actually quite shocked because considering this was a huge hit for Disney, a huge number of cast in this film am more surprised it's not a 9 or at least past an 8. I give this a 10 out of 10, I love all the songs even the 'laughing' song. There's just something about this film that makes me happy that I grew up with this film. Which is why, I think when people do have kids this is a film they should definitely watch.
