Top 10 Favourite Horror Video Games

Introduction

Welcome to my top 10 Favourite Horror Video Games, these are the games I have played, but that's not all! I write down what my ideal horror game would be, and I think most people would agree with that and even a better question why do we love horror video games? Is it the thrill of being in a horror environment or chopping the heads of zombies? Speaking of Zombies we start off with quite a new zombie game called The Evil Within.

1) The Evil Within (2014)

I am playing this game at the moment and I love it. The Evil Within is just an incredible video game, it is in episodes but you feel you need it in episodes. You will die at some point because it's such an intense, fast thinking game that keeps you on your toes. The storyline is quite detailed, the detail on the zombies is quite nice and it's not just zombies you see either. There's these creatures that will give anybody a scare. Even thou am on an easy setting, I feel every bullet counts! I have at this moment, a pistol, two kinds of shotgun and a crossbow. I have defeated my fair few zombies but there's riddles, mysteries, and lots of bosses to get through. I love the fact you don't just have to shoot your way through, you can run, which is more realistic. It's quite a realistic game, like if you shoot a zombie in the face it doesn't explode right away takes a few more shots doesn't it? Especially, if it's a pistol. You can upgrade your weapons which I like and even your own abilities....How? Well, that would be a spoiler but it's worth buying, I do feel you can't always play it because it is so intense! And, it's a great game! I would highly recommend anyone buying this game.

2) Saw (2009)

I love the film and the series of films that Saw has become. But, the game was nearly at the level of who is Saw and who is Jigsaw. It was an interesting game, and I did enjoy it but there was room for improvements. As you would guess with Saw,this game is mainly a survivor game and you have to fight other people that are in the game to save themselves. The game play is quite straight forward, you get to do puzzles, fight baddies and discover Jigsaws secrets. But, I think you would only get this game if you're a massive fan of Saw. It's not a long game that yo expect if you're a survivor but it's interesting if you like film to video game concept.

3) Resident Evil 5 (2009)

More of the well known horror games, Resident Evil is truly a fantastic horror game for all horror fans. From films to video games, video games to films Resident Evil is the top for Zombie games because of the storyline, the zombies, the bosses, and the unique weapons you come across. I picked Resident Evil 5, because it's one of my favourite games in the Resident Evil series. I do feel, that the detail is slightly better, the environment is bigger and the characters have back stories. I do feel, that they do need to make Resident Evil some how more free roam. You discover stuff on you're own. You make the story, and if you're going the wrong way, make there be a billion zombies blocking you! You know? But, resident evil 5 there was something in this game that I liked , and I think it was the weapons mostly and the finding of ammo, weapons was nice. It's a simple Zombie game, it doesn't keep you really on you're toes like The Evil Within but it's worth playing.

4) Deadrising (2006)

I have to say that, I mainly picked this because it's different from other zombie video games. It's free roam, you have to get survivors but your whole environment is a weapon. You're in a mall, you can kill zombies with baseball bats, tennis rackets, knives and they don't go. Which is where I think they went wrong with Deadrising 2 and Deadrising 3, you can combine weapons which is cool, but after a while they can break. That's why I picked the first one, because you can keep using it over and over again. But, it's quite a big map, you have to survive and that's what I like, have to survive for so many days. And, the fact that you have to find survivors and survive to get there is more exciting. And, the boss zombies are quite unique in themselves as well because there slightly bigger and have something about them, like two chainsaws in there hands. I do like it as well, because you can customize your character and just have fun with this game, there's no tension it's just pure fun.

5) The House of the Dead (2003)

Got this on video game and it's fantastic in arcades, The House of the Dead for me, has the best zombie detail in existence and the story is interesting if you ever get to the end. The bosses are as big as the screen, simple weapons, and you kill as much as you can. It's fun, exciting and a fantastic game for zombie lovers. Plus, the game I have there's two different stories and I enjoy both but I have to say I enjoy the first story more because of the bosses. I can't really say more about the game because it's simple little package and simple controls and you can get it for your old consoles and I did hear that they are doing this game for the newer consoles as well because of how popular they are.

6) Left 4 Dead 2 (2009)

I do like the fact that's it's in episodes so you don't have to rush anything, but my favourite level is in the Dark Canival. It's fun killing clowns and mimes, it just makes the game more fun. The controls is really easy, the weapons are fun and you can upgrade and buy once you finish the level I think. Plus, like the fact all the zombies are different in size and gender as well, like the game creators actually thought there not all slow moving male zombies, they changed the way we see zombie in a different way. I do enjoy generally roaming when you have the chance, and look for Witchers as well but I don't like the fact you can't customize your character so it's doesn't feel as much as you're in the game.

7) BioShock (2007)

The game itself is unique, there is nothing that can compare to this game. I do like the suspense in the game, the story line is incredibly interesting and the environment itself is visually stunning for a game players imagination. I haven't played it in ages thou, so I may get something wrong. I love the Little Sister character because at first she doesn't look like much and then suddenly she scares you alot! Like, so much you just want to blast it to another country....no let's make it planet. The weapons are stunning that suits the environment you're in. But, you have to save the Little Sisters but I won't say why, but the ending is incredible. I have to say thou, the bosses are hard and I like that it gives you a challenge and not an easy kill. I would recommend this game to anyone because it stands out on it's own and the game itself you cannot like it, unless you don't like horror games.

8) Manhunt (2003)

Manhunt is a stealth-based psychological horror video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. The game's story follows a supposedly executed death row inmate who is forced to participate in a series of snuff films for former film producer and now underground snuff director, Lionel Starkweather (voiced by Brian Cox). It has some intensive scenes but it's exciting because it's more stealth mode than guns shooting everywhere and the detail to the blood, violence and gore is pretty good considering how old the game is.

9) Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare (2010)

I love Red Dead Redemption in general, it's a free roam game set in the Wild Wild West, you're weapons suit the environment, you see bosses, gangs, Indians and Zombies?!?! That's right this game is another Zombie game but what I like about this, you can get a better zombie horse! You can hog-tie you're zombies down and more importantly you can shoot there heads off all day long, or punch them in the face. It's a fun game with a quirky storyline and it's not the detail of the zombies that make the game, it's how ridiculous it is in the Wild West. If you're a fan of the Red Dead Redemption game you'll just fall in love with this game. Am still playing it from time to time, and the missions are just as ridiculous and sometimes serious depends which you do. But, it is generally an exciting game.

10) Silent Hill (1999)

Silent Hill is a survival horror video game for the PlayStation, the game follows Harry Mason as he searches for his missing adopted daughter in the eponymous fictional American town of Silent Hill; stumbling upon a cult conducting a ritual to revive a deity it worships, he discovers her true origin. Five game endings are possible, depending on actions taken by the player, including one joke ending. I think that's what I like about the game, the endings change depending of what you do within the game which is nice because you could play this game 5 times and get 5 completely different results. But, I love the detail considering it's 1999 but they were published by Konami which is quite a great game company back in the day.

Why Do We Enjoy Horror Video Games?

I think it's the fact that we love watching horror films and to actually be in a horror environment makes us think what we say at the pictures. "Oh, I wouldn't do that, I escape through the window" or "I'll shoot him in the head to save my bullets". Just simple stuff, so when we have a horror video game we can play out what we would do and not what the writers put in stone what will happen. And, I think it's the fact we love the suspense, the thrill, the blood and the guts. And, most of the games I mentioned we have a choice of how the game plans out. Plus, I think it's because we like to be in the situations like Saw and The Evil Within that believability and realism that we want to capture and be physically in the game, and not just playing a character. Yes, we haven't customized the character to look like us, but it's our duties as games to survive. Which is what I think we like the games like these, survival of the fittest is in our code as humans. So, seeing it in a horror game to survive it's a challenge.

What Would Be My Ideal Horror Game?

I would love a game, that's completely free roam, you start off in a basement of the house, and you're in a popular town like New York. You see survivors, you see bosses of zombies, but not just zombies creators, aliens, vampires. And, the day times and night time reflects of what enemies you'll get. The weapons are pretty straight forward, it's what you can get. Nothing, technical, nothing advance....straight to the point and simple. So, you walk pass a cop car, in the trunk a shotgun, you're in a house, a chef's knife. Adding the element of Deadrising, where you are in the environment is you're weapon. Then, before you start the game, you can create the character and start where you want with 5 options.....Hospital (your character is a nurse or doctor if your under 18 a patient), Police Station (your character is a cop or picked a child setting you're in jail for shop lifting), House (your character either businessman/lawyer or picked a child your teenager son/daughter), School (your a teacher or student depending what age you picked) and a shopping centre (manager or picked the child/teenage setting a clerk). So, quite simple right? WRONG! You all start with a watch and it's going to be a realistic watch so it feels like that's the time. So, you know when day time and night time is, you have safe houses which you discover. You're re-spawn is you're first warehouse. The weapons you can swap and trade with other survivors or if they need a certain item you can get it, give it them for something in return. Bosses? Nuclear disasters the size of Godzilla either run/hide until you hijack a tank at the military. And, I would like it you can change you're character and having rankings in the community. So, you start of as a simple solider and finish off as the leader, you can abandon to go solo as a lone wolf or bounty hunter. This is just my ideal horror game, become whoever you want and earn cash to survive, make a house so zombies or creators can't get in. Could be a great game.

So, What's The Bottom Line?

I think horror games are becoming more popular because we all love a challenge at survival and test our intelligence. Bottom Line? Ahhhh! Zombies! cut off the head or remove the brain....and that's the bottom line.
