What's The Bottom Line with 2014's Hercules?

Hercules (2014)

Starring Dwayne Johnson (Fast and Furious 6 (2013) and The Scorpion King (2002)), John Hurt (Alien (1979) and Hellboy (2004)) and Ian McShane ( Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) and Kung Fu Panda (2008))

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

Let's just say YES YES YES to the fact that Dwayne Johnson has a role perfect for him! Hercules! The one impression that Hercules has is that, he needs muscles and lots of them! So, that being said and we know Dwayne Johnson is one of the best all muscular actors out there, that's me being honest, this role is perfect for him. But, what do we expect? We seen all kinds of different versions of Hercules, we seen Disney take it on and we see Hollywood. To be honest, I was expecting ZEUS to appear, the almighty god with that white beard and lighting rods. But, honestly, I can see this purely from the trailer that this is an action packed film. The trailer we already see three huge monsters that get killed and considering it's the trailer, we will see much more in the film. But, let's take a moment to mention the actors I said above, John Hurt, who let's be honest whatever films he is in...there brilliant. You can't fault his acting performance, and I think he thinks carefully before going into something. Then, we have Ian McShane whom I watched recently in American Horror Story Asylum and I love him in many films.... So, what could go wrong?

After I Watched The Film?

Realistic, dramatic, funny and action packed film I have summed up the film in one sentence. But, that's my opinion in the film so let me break it down for you. Realistic? Well, there's no magic rubbish and no magical guy in the sky with a big white beard and lighting rod! BUT, when I say it's realistic you can believe it. I think it's more taking the myth and legend of Hercules and actually making it more of a legend. The dramatic parts are actually listening and learning about who is Hercules because there's more than what we know about. And, I like to mention that this film makes Hercules look very different then what we believe which is good because we don't want to see Hercules the same we want to see him differently. So, I don't want to reveal to much but we understand Hercules as a person than a ultimate demi-God. Now, the funny bits....this is more to Ian McShane's character which I won't go into too much details but they are funny. And, the fact you see Ian McShane kick some serious butt! But, the funny moments are plenty to keep most people happy if there not into the action packed moments. Then, the action packed.....let me be honest because you're reading this.....There's not that much then what the trailer says. Am being honest, the trailer all of them killings happen in the first 5 minutes.....I bet you're thinking how?!?! But, makes sense when you watch the film.

Could There Be A Sequel And Who Would Be A Great Foe For Hercules?

Considering we have seen the more realistic of Hercules and no huge mythical creatures, I think there should be a film with three huge big mythical villains and versues Hercules because we didn't really see that in the film. And, we want to see this Hercules defeat something major. I don't want to say why, but maybe these huge mythical creatures wish to get rid of Hercules because of the stories they have heard. So, I would pick Hades looking more scarier than the Crash of the Titans and having that more comedy of Hades from the Disney version being the first villain we see. Then, we lead up to a more curious villain that we don't know about like a Golem. If you don't know anything about Golem's they are stone made creatures and The Simpsons did a spoof of it, basically put a order in it's mouth and it will do it. So, considering we haven't seen any Golems in any films, make them around 30 feet high, and when smashed they can rebuild themselves. But, the final baddy I would have Hades magically come back somehow because he is a God. God's can't die easily, so would have like a Narnia battle. Hercules and his little Army, versus the sons and fires of Hell! And, the surprise weapon wouldn't be Hercules maybe one of the lower soldiers to show anyone can be a hero.

Facts About This Film

  1. Whilst on "Live with Kelly and Michael" Dwayne Johnson revealed that his beard on the movie was actually made of yak testicle hair.... lovely.
  2. To prepare for the role, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson took on a grueling training routine for eight months. But, did he really need it?!?!
  3. In the flashback when King Eurystheus congratulates Hercules on his victory over the hydra, he's shown breeding peacocks, an animal closely linked to the goddess Hera in the mythology and maybe a hint at his true intentions.
  4. SPOILER ALERT but it really shows you what Dwayne Johnson wanted to do in the film. Read with care, during shooting of the films climax, where Hercules breaks free of his chains. Dwayne Johnson (Hercules) stated that he "blacked out" after every take: "I asked the prop department to lock me in with real steel chains that I couldn't break, so the performance would be real. When Hercules finally accepts his fate of being the son of Zeus, it's the epic moment of the mythology - and our movie. We shot this scene 8 times - I blacked out every time. Down to my knees. Well worth the pain.. this moment is iconic. I'm excited for you to see it"
  5. But, is Hercules the son of Zeus....NO! Shock alert! In Greek mythology, the god Zeus is the father of a child named Heracles, not Hercules. Hercules is the Roman name and the divine father is called Jupiter. The film producers probably used the name Hercules because it is better known that Heracles.

My Rankings

If you like Clash of the Titans, you will still love this film. Yes, there's no Liam Neeson being Zeus, no Gods of Thunder, not really much mythical creatures. But, that's what we really want! IMDB rated this a simple 6.1 however we have to think of what this film showed us. We did expect so much during the film, but as the film went on we see incredible twists and turns. Then, we can state that Hercules 2014 is the right way forward of having that realism that this could happen then fairies, mermaids and a caring Prime Minister all mythical of those sense. So, I say to you even thou it got a simple 6 rating, I rate this a 8 out of 10. Highly watchable, full of emotional drama and action packed. Therefore, why isn't it a 10 out of 10.......Well, I have to admit some bits dragged and some of the scenes didn't make much sense. But, overall you don't see those mistakes unless you REALLY look at them. Well worth your time to watch this film.....Just don't be a huge mythical brain buff because you'll see all the mistakes.

So, What's The Bottom Line?

Bottom line? You like Dwayne Johnson in general and want to see him kick some Roman butt! Then, this is a film to watch. Want to see Ian McShane be his funny natural self whilst slaying and cutting heads off...this is a film to watch. But, bottom line if you are looking for accurate information....then this isn't a film for you. It's pure fun, action packed with some huge twists to get any Demi-God hungry for justice, honour and bravery and that's the bottom line.
